Twenty years ago, he started out in a modest workshop where maintenance was done solely on Heisterkamp’s own trucks. Today, he holds a leading position in a state-of-the-art facility where technology, teamwork and craftsmanship go hand in hand. In this interview, he shares his journey at Heisterkamp, the major changes in the workshop and what makes working here so special.

Can you briefly introduce yourself?
I’ve been working at Heisterkamp for nearly twenty years. Since 2018, I’ve been in my current role, after completing my Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering and Management. That was quite a demanding period: working full time, raising a young family, and studying in the evenings. I often found myself with my nose in the books until 11 p.m., and on Saturdays I travelled to Utrecht for exams. But looking back, I’m really glad I did it. I learned a lot, and the diploma was essential for taking the next step in my career.
What has changed the most in those twenty years?
Pretty much everything. When I first started, we only worked on our own fleet. Maintenance and repairs were strictly for our own trucks. We had one external customer, the neighbour, and that was it. That’s completely changed. Over the years, we’ve developed the commercial side of the business. Thanks to word of mouth, good relationships and our no-nonsense approach, our customer base has grown significantly. We were given the opportunity to expand, and that side of the business has become a major pillar within our workshop operations.
What about the workshop itself?
The workshop has grown right along with the business. We used to work in a dark and cramped space. Now we’re in a bright, spacious, and ultra-modern facility. With large windows, lots of daylight, air filtration systems, underfloor heating and even cooling. A healthy and comfortable working environment is a top priority here. We can proudly say we now have one of the most modern and well-equipped workshops in Europe. The air is even filtered and refreshed every night, which really contributes to a healthy workplace.

How has the technology changed over time?
Technology has changed massively. Where we used to work mainly mechanically, electronics are now essential. These days we have ten diagnostic computers for all the different brands. Back then, one reader was enough. Software updates have become a standard part of almost every maintenance check. But even with all the tech, it still comes down to craftsmanship. The computer points you in the right direction, but it’s the mechanic who diagnoses and solves the problem. You need well-trained people and in-depth knowledge to do that properly. One thing that hasn’t changed is that we’ve always had access to the best tools. We never cut corners on quality equipment, and that really helps our team work efficiently and with satisfaction.
Are you prepared for electric trucks?
We definitely are. All our mechanics, and even our office staff, have obtained the NEN 9140 certification. That’s the baseline for safely working on electric vehicles. The market is still developing, though. At this stage, most electric trucks are serviced by the dealers themselves. Manufacturers want to collect as much data as possible before releasing maintenance to external workshops. But once that knowledge becomes more widely available, we’ll naturally be more involved.
How would you describe the team?
We have a young and enthusiastic team with lots of expertise. What really stands out is the way everyone supports each other. During working hours, but also beyond. Colleagues think along, help each other out, and even swap shifts when needed. We have a 24/7 on-call service, and when something goes wrong on the road, we find a solution together. We even use group chats and share photos to help each other remotely. That team spirit is incredibly strong.

Are there any traditions that have remained over the years?
Absolutely. Friday afternoons are still our moment to wind down with a drink after work. We also organise fun activities regularly. Right now, we’re planning a motorcycle tour with colleagues. More and more team members are getting their licences, so it seems like a great outing. Every year we have our own department get-together. And of course, we still enjoy the traditional Heisterkamp parties, like the Christmas and summer events. These traditions really help keep the atmosphere enjoyable and relaxed.
What makes working at Heisterkamp so special for you?
It’s the combination of craftsmanship, a modern workspace, and a close-knit team. We work with the latest technologies and keep learning every day. But most importantly, it’s the sense of teamwork. Everyone’s there for each other. That’s what makes working here so rewarding and enjoyable.
